May 1988, on our first trip to HI, I went to the Tower Records CD bins in the original Waikiki International Market Place, looking for traditional Hawaiian music. I found several wonderful discs, but this one was the best, my introduction to music I'd never known before. See Hawaiian Music.
September 1998, Ledward Kaapana of Hui Ohana played the Texas Union Ballroom, second billed to Alison Krauss, the first of many, many times I've seen him live. Ledward is my favorite of all guitarists I've heard. Between sets, I tracked Led down at a Burger King in the Union building, asked him to sign my CD. Led exclaimed "Where'd you get this?"
Dennis Pavao, Led's younger cousin and lead singer in Hui Ohana, would have turned 72 July 11, 2023, if not for a fatal brain aneurysm when he was 50. Not long before that I tracked Dennis down at a gig in Lahaina and had no trouble persuading him to sing songs from this CD.
