tl;dr Elmo is in AVES hospital, they/we are trying to be optimistic he might come home Saturday for a year or more.
Elmo (who we hope will turn 13 next month) had seemed fine until a few months ago when he seemed to start having (manageable) gastrointestinal problems and gradual weight loss. Ultrasound two weeks ago indicated probable irritable bowel and pancreatic problems. Started treatment with steroids, vitamin B12 and special food. The g.i. problems seemed better. However, yesterday he started having obvious respiratory problems, totally unchacteristic behavior, obviously unhappy. Took him to Dr. Miner at GSAH this morning. x-rays showed fluid in lungs. Blood tests ok. Radiology and cardiology consults indicated fluid was likely from previously unrecognized cardiac problems that were exacerbated by the steroids. Congestive heart failure led to the fluid in lungs. Oxygen treatment and Lasix at GSAH seemed to help, but recommended transfer to AVES hospital for continued oxygen/Lasix followed by echocardiogram. He seemed noticeably better when I transferred him from GSAH to AVES. Dr. Pagano at AVES explained things thoroughly. If respiration continues to improve tonight, echocardiogram in the morning should indicate prognosis. Best likely case is that after discontinuing steroids and adding cardiac meds that his problems will be manageable at home for a year or more. AVES is the largest, best equipped veterinary facility I have ever seen. Photo is of Elmo’s oxygen compartment with EKG late this afternoon. Visited him again this evening to take them his thyroid meds. He seemed more relaxed, purred when I petted.
